Contractor turns over finished oval project

- Jessica Ann R. Pareja -

CEBU, Philippines - The contractor of the P40-million rubberized track oval of the Cebu City Sports Center turned over the project to the Cebu City government yesterday after its inauguration on Sunday.

Sierra Universal Corp. president and general Manager Baldomero B. Penamante also asked the city to issue them the certificate of completion and acceptance, and instruct the Philippine Sports Commission to release the 20 percent balance amounting to $109,184.87.

The 2012 Private Schools Athletic Association that kicked off last Sunday was the first to benefit the brand new eight-lane, 2D section track oval.

The oval’s rehabilitation started in November last year after the importation of the Rekortan M99 Full-Polyurethane Synthetic Track Surface, the kind of rubber used in the oval.

The contractor imported the rubber to assure quality. The oval has a five-year warranty.

Sierra Universal Corp. issues guidelines for proper maintenance of the oval, which includes the wearing of appropriate sport shoes.

Motor vehicles should not be driven over the surface, which must be kept clean of litter, grass cuttings, leaves and sand.

The surface must be hosed down every six months.

“This must be preceded with sprinkling or spraying with a non-foaming detergent on the surface. This will prevent a buildup of atmospheric dirt deposits and assist in maintaining a fresh appearance. All chemicals residue must be completely removed,” Penamante said in his letter to Mayor Michael Rama.

The rehabilitated track oval has wide concrete area to be used for other activities like aerobics, taekwando and volleyball. Railings were installed to fence the rubberized oval to limit it to runners and joggers only.

The wider concrete portion is also intended for floats during the Sinulog. The gate has also been widened for more convenient entrance and exit.

The Cebu City Sports Center Management Council is mulling on increasing the entrance fee to generate more revenues for the center.

Ricky Ballesteros, CCSC Manager, said in earlier reports that entrance fees for both students and adults may be increased by P5 to double their income.

The oval will be opened to the public next week after the national competition.  (FREEMAN)
