9-yr-old kid drowns in Toledo

CEBU, Philippines - A nine-year-old girl drowned Monday afternoon while swimming in the seawaters of Barangay Ibo, Toledo City.

Ana Cris Bejoco was with her cousin Roselyn swimming near an estuary at 3:30 p.m. when the strong current swept them away from the shore. The children were rescued by Jovani Basillote, Roselyn’s father, but Bejoco was declared dead on arrival at the Toledo District Hospital.

“Diha sila sa may baybayon naligo kay para makuha ang bas sa ilang lawas, nahibong nalang ang iyang iyaan nga pagkita nila, layo na kayo ang mga bata, (they were swimming near the seashore to wash off the sands from their body, then the aunt was surprised to see the kids drifted away from the shore) said SPO1 Benedicto Bobbiles.

Bobbiles said that the water current near the estuary or mouth of a stream is strong especially during low tide.—(FREEMAN)
