ALU-TUCP Workers College to accept non-members

- Jose P. Sollano -

CEBU, Philippines - Members of the Associated Labor Unions-Trade Unions Congress of the Philippines residing in Metro Cebu and their dependents who cannot afford to pursue a college education will be given priority at the newly-established ALU-TUCP Workers College Foundation, Inc. at Pier 1, Cebu City.

They shall be prioritized through the scholarship program with the help of Technical Education and Skills Development Administration.

Art Barrit, director of the ALU-TUCP Workers College Foundation, Inc. told The FREEMAN that officials of TESDA-Cebu province has given them signal to start the operation of the workers college foundation once they complete the finishing touches of the classroom’s facilities.

According to Barrit, the Workers College Foundation was established as part of the ALU-TUCP’s concern for union members, their dependents and the public.

“Gawas sa mga membro sa union ug ilang mga kabanay, mahimo usab nga atong dawaton kadtong dili mga membro, (Aside from the union members and their relatives, we may also accept non-members.)” Barrit said.

The Workers College will conduct trainings for those who want to become call center agents as well as masseurs and masseuses.

TUCP Rep. Raymond Mendoza allocated P5 million from his Priority Development Assistance Fund for the scholarship program to help students in Cebu.

Rep. Mendoza believes that one way of helping jobseekers is to provide them the foundation through proper training. Mendoza and TESDA director general Joel Villanueva agreed to help each other in the implementation of the program.

Under the TUCP’s expansion program, non-union members will be considered.

The ALU-TUCP had recently established their Workers Training Center Foundation, Inc. here to serve their constituents in Metro Cebu and Central Visayas through TESDA’s Training for Work Program.

“It is our long term goal to capacitate our workers and their families in the provinces so that they can find gainful employment or create sustainable livelihood as part of the Aquino government’s anti-poverty thrust,” said Mendoza. — (FREEMAN)
