Regional marine laboratory opens
CEBU, Philippines - The Regional Integrated Coastal Resources Management (ICRM) Center -7 was inaugurated recently at the Cebu Technological University (CTU).
Acquired from the Asian Development Bank through Department of Environment and Natural Resources DENR-ICRM project, the center would serve as the hub for consolidating and promoting sustainable management of the coastal and marine resources in Central Visayas by monitoring and researching on the rich marine biodiversity as well as conduct training programs.
The center also serves as the focal point in undertaking information, education, and communication campaign to promote awareness on coastal and marine conservation and management.
DENR Regional Technical Director Dr. Al Orolfo said that they chose CTU for its academic programs and facilities related to CRM.
He added that CTU also has a strategic location to other academic institutions and government agencies as well as the availability of CRM-related personnel and staff with appropriate qualification and background.
Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia, who was invited by CTU President Dr. Bonifacio Villanueva to attend the blessing and inauguration, said that with the ICRM project now housed in CTU, they are once again partnering with the Cebu Provincial Government. Garcia is also committed in preserving and rehabilitating the rich marine resources.
“Choosing the CTU ICRM center echoes once again the collaboration that we had long started and will continue, this time in the area where I have given the topmost priority, coastal resource management and the protection of our seas,” Garcia said.
The governor led the ceremonial ribbon-cutting of the new facility and the unveiling of the memorabilia together with Cebu City Mayor Mike Rama, CTU President Dr. Bonifacio Villanueva and DENR Regional Technical Director Dr. Al Orolfo. — (FREEMAN)
