Special non-working holiday in Cebu City
CEBU, Philippines - Cebu City residents will have a long weekend this week because of the 75th Charter Day Celebration of the city today.
February 24 is a special non-working holiday in Cebu City as provided for under Republic Act 7287 which was approved by then President Corazon Aquino. All public and private schools within the city will have no classes today.
Under the labor guidelines, workers who report for work today are entitled to receive additional 30-percent on top of their daily rate.
The Cebu City charter will turn 75 today after the passage of the Commonwealth Act No. 58 in October 1936. The law was sponsored by then senator Vicente R. Rama who also became mayor of the city in 1938 to 1940.
The City of Cebu was formally inaugurated in ceremonies held in front of the pre-war City Hall building at the Plaza Rizal in February 24, 1937. Then secretary of the Interior Elpido Quirino came to Cebu to attend the ceremonies on behalf of President Manuel Quezon. — (FREEMAN)
