CEBU, Philippines - The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) called on 42,000 barangays to conduct disaster preparedness, awareness, and response campaigns to mitigate the impact of a strong earthquake.
This is pursuant to memorandum circular 2012-25 issued by Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo informing all provincial governors, city and municipal mayors, Liga ng mga Barangay chapter presidents and barangay captains.
DILG regional directors and field officers and all others concerned about the synchronized barangay assembly day for the first semester of calendar year 2012.
In a memorandum, the DILG stressed the need for the barangay chairpersons to be always ready with their disaster risk reduction and management plans, including the evacuation of residents.
It was also ordered that barangay officials to follow disaster protocols, install early warning systems, conduct regular drills and exercises, and prepare their constituents in addressing the adverse effect of disasters.
Barangay chairmen also mandated to undertake various activities such as the presentation of accomplishment and financial reports; discuss problems, issues and concerns affecting the barangays like peace and order situation, solid waste management and among others.
The barangay were also informed to take part of the nationwide synchronized planting on June 25 in celebration of the Philippine Arbor Day. — (FREEMAN)
