Cebuanos asked to keep Cebu clean
CEBU, Philippines - The Beautiful Cebu Movement Foundation Inc. spearheaded by businesswoman Mariquita Salimbangon-Yeung is appealing for help from Cebuanos in helping them realize every Cebuano’s dream of having a beautiful and clean Cebu.
“I am appealing to all the Cebuanos to please help us. This is not for ourselves but this is for all of us Cebuanos. We have to clean our own city,” Yeung said in a press conference yesterday as they officially announced the foundation’s upcoming event this February 29 dubbed as the “Masquerade Ball”.
Businesswoman Margie Lhuillier, co-chairwoman of the foundation said that the ball is a fund-raising activity aimed to raise at least P10 million which will be used to beautify the city. It will be held in the Grand Ballroom of the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu City.
Architect Tessie Javier, the foundation’s vice president for planning said that with the “little” amount that they have solicited since last year, they were able to provide more than 100 lampposts along Osmeña Blvd. from the Capitol to Sanciangko St.
“If one can notice now that from Fuente to Capitol, the street is well-lighted including the trees. Di na ta matakilpo kung maglakaw kay nindot na atong sidewalk. Everyone in that area is cooperating,” Javier said.
The foundation is likewise thankful for the support of Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia who requested six contractors to repair the road including the sidewalk for free.
The six contractors were WTG Construction and Development Corporation, BARSS Steel Construction, Pragmatic Development and Construction Corporation, Rovilla Construction; Socor Construction and Supreme ABF Construction and Supply Inc.
Yeung said there are also some establishments within the area voluntarily beautifying their facade.
“Pero naa’y uban nga igo ra mutando, pero wala lang gihapon. That’s why we continue to make an appeal to all Cebuanos to help us,” Yeung said.
Yeung added that they are targeting the completion of the project 60 days from yesterday.
So far, four contractors have agreed to help. These are: Dakay Construction, WT Construction, Primary Structures and Peter and Paul Dy Construction.
Javier also thanked the 53rd Engineering Brigade of the Philippine Army who labored for free.
Yeung added that the city government has no counterpart in this multi-million restoration project so as to unburden the city government. (FREEMAN)
