CEBU, Philippines - Stormy weather, rough seas and boat engine trouble did not stop Capitol officials from crossing the two islets in Bantayan Island to distribute goods to the residents in the area.
The Capitol delegation was led by Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia and Fourth District Rep. Benhur Salimbangon.
The distribution of rice and canned goods to the residents in Barangays Luyong Baybay and Doong in Doong islet and Botigues islet in Bantayan town was part of the two-day visit of Garcia in Bantayan Island.
Capitol officials composed of Garcia, Vice Governor Agnes Magpale, Provincial Board Members Joven Mondigo Jr., Sun Shimura and Jose Ribomapil Holganza Jr. heard a mass first at the St. Peter-Paul Parish before navigating to the two islets where the priest asked the churchgoers to pray for the safety of the officials.
Except for Magpale, who opted not to join the group for fear, Capitol officials arrived in the islets safely. It was however delayed because the boat’s propeller malfunctioned in the middle of the rough seas. The Capitol officials have to be rescued by another boat.
Hundreds of residents and students welcomed the arrival of the group at the shore of Barangay Luyong Baybay. The officials were then transported on tricycles that are commonly seen in urban areas used for transporting pigs and slaughtered livestock.
The residents were elated by Garcia’s visit saying it was the first time that they were visited by a governor.
After the symbolic distribution of rice and canned goods to selected recipients, the group proceeded to Barangay Botigues Island.
The Capitol provided 250 sacks of rice while Salimbangon provided 7,102 pieces of canned goods. A wheelchair was also given to a child in Botigues from the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office.
Because it was already low tide, some boats got grounded causing delay in going back to Santa Fe port back to Cebu City. —(FREEMAN)
