4th district gets more livelihood

- Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon -

CEBU, Philippines - The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) 7 is currently conducting a study on the possible opening of an area in the Fourth District of Cebu where seaweeds, fish and other marine products can be grown for additional livelihood to thousands of fisher folk from Bantayan Island and Bogo City.

Fourth District Rep. Benhur Salimbangon said that if the study will yield positive results, P20 million will be allocated for the beneficiaries to ensure a sustainable source of income.

“We have thousands of fisher folk nga kinahanglan gyud nga atong tabangan,” Salimbangon said during a recent meeting with BFAR’s marine culture specialist Tek Orbita and senior aqua-culturist Franck Santos.

Meanwhile, Salimbangon said he will allocate P10 million from his Priority Development Assistance Fund to farmer-beneficiaries in his district who will be planting fruit-bearing trees.

He said the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-7 is still in the process of identifying the area where the farmers can plant the trees.

“This is also one way of helping the environment as by planting trees, this would prevent possible flashfloods and landslides,” Salimbangon said.  (FREEMAN)
