Capitol sees more money from Larsian

CEBU, Philippines - The provincial government is expecting bigger income from the popular barbeque place, Larsian, after it will converted into the so-called “Eco-Larsian” after the Sinulog festivities.

Provincial Treasurer Roy Salubre reported that Larsian contributed P3.750 million to Capitol’s coffers last year and P3.515 million in 2010.

Each of the more than 50 stalls owners at Larsian pays the province a rent of P4,500 every month.

Based on “existing situation,” the province is targeting P4.5 million from the barbeque place this year, especially that the improvement is expected to double the economic activity in the area.

Larsian serves grilled meat and seafood. It is open from 2 p.m. until the wee hours of the morning.

Last year, Governor Gwendolyn Garcia approved P7.1 million to upgrade Larsian.

Provincial Engineer Eulogio Pelayre said they were supposed to finish the renovation works before Christmas but vendors thereat were worried that works might still carry on during the holidays, especially the installation of the solar light bulbs.

This prompted Garcia to order to put it off the project until after the Sinulog.

The plan to upgrade the place came up when the group, My Shelter Foundation, proposed to Garcia its plan to showcase its solar bulbs at Larsian.

When renovation work starts, Pelayre said they might ask the Cebu City government to close a road nearby temporarily so that food services in the area will not be disrupted.

Aside from promoting the use of solar lights in the area, Pelayre said another reason to renovate Larsian is to address sanitation concerns.

Vendors and customers will be provided with washing facilities and four restrooms will be added to the existing 10.

Aside from the barbecue stalls, the new Eco-Larsian will also have a fruit stand. The barbecue grilling stations will be placed in the center of the area and will be ventilated so that smoke will not be trapped. The dining sheds will be postponed on the sides. (FREEMAN)
