Some VIP guests seek gun ban exemption

- Ryan Christopher J. Sorote -

CEBU, Philippines - Several VIP (very important people) guests for the Sinulog Grand Parade on Sunday are seeking exemption from the special gun ban for their security escorts.

During yesterday’s Talakayan Sa Isyong Pulis, Police Regional Office 7 Deputy for Operations Supt. Louie Oppus said only those security personnel who can provide a letter order (LO) from their regional director may be granted the exemption.

“They (security escorts) have to secure a letter order from the regional director from where they come from,” Oppus said.

Aside from the LO, Oppus said security escorts would also be required to wear complete uniform during the duration of their stay. Failure to heed the requirements may have the security escorts arrested and charged for illegal possession of firearms.

“We hope they (VIPs) would understand,” he said.

The police arrangement regarding Cebu City’s gun ban also applies to other law en forcement agencies such as the Armed Forces of the Philippines, National Bureau of Investigation, and Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, among others.

Last week, members for the Regional Mobile Patrol Group underwent a special training on securing VIPs during the Sinulog. The training was initiated by a team from the Regional Special Operations Group, headed by Chief Insp. Rogelio Pineda.

Local policemen in civilian clothes in covert operations will also be exempted from the ban but must bring their respected patrol orders at all times. The patrol order must also contain the specific details concerning their assignment and attire.

The special gun ban temporarily cancels permit to carry firearms outside residence throughout the city. It took effect Thursday last week and will stay in effect until January 26, said Cebu City Police Office Director Melvin Ramon Buenafe. It was Buenafe who requested for the special gun ban from Camp Crame.

The director said the gun ban was put in place to prevent untoward incidents concerning firearms from happening, especially during the Sinulog festivities. — /JMO (FREEMAN)
