DOH renews call vs. firecrackers

- Garry B. Lao -

CEBU, Philippines - The Department of Health-7 renewed its call to the Cebuanos and to the public to refrain from using firecrackers, especially illegal ones, in welcoming the New Year to prevent injuries and death.

This as the DOH Regional Director Susana Madarieta also reminded the public on the ill effects of firecrackers like asthma if excessive smoke from firecrackers is inhaled.

Last December 25, in the celebration of Christmas, the incidence of firecracker-related injuries declined this year compared to 2010, based on reported cases from the different hospitals in Cebu City and the province.

So far, only nine cases of blast-related injuries were admitted in the various hospitals here, according to the DOH-7 “Iwas Paputok” Program team, which conducted monitoring of the blast related cases.

Last year, the DOH-7 recorded 46 victims of firecracker injuries from the province and cities of Cebu during the celebration of both Christmas and New Year.

Madarieta also noted that there are no reported cases of fatalities due to blasting incidents or improper handling of firecrackers and pyrotechnics. Only minor injuries were referred to the hospitals in which victims were not confined in the hospitals and were just given medication and treatment.

In the DOH advisory, it also warned children against playing with firecrackers that failed to explode and for water to be poured on them to avoid further injury.

If an injury occurs, wash the affected area with mild soap and clean water as first aid treatment to prevent tetanus infection and then bring the injured person to the nearest hospital.  (FREEMAN)
