BPO applicants to be improved

CEBU, Philippines - Members of the academe accepted the challenge to support the need to increase the potential of Business Process Outsourcing applicants being hired by creating a specific curriculum using the industry-based module that can equip students with knowledge and skills needed by the industry.

In a recent general membership meeting of the Labor Tripartite Council in Education, they discussed the low hiring rate of applicants to various positions in the Business Processing Industry in Cebu.

Joslyn B. Canon, Qualfon Country Manager, presented to the body a research acknowledging the efforts of the government, through the Technical Education Skills Development Authority, in training the applicants so they can pass the screening.

However, their experience in job fairs show that the industry players were not satisfied, citing for example instances when only two were hired out of 100 trainees who finished the course.

According to Canon, there is much to be done in terms of giving the graduates skills suitable for the industry where there are vast employment opportunities.

Thus, she added that the training program should be reviewed and crafted according to the current needs of the industry. 

Dean Baldomero Estenzo of the University of Cebu – College of Law asked for a copy of their current communications module for Business Processing Outsourcing staff. His purpose, according to Dean Estenzo, is for him to create a curriculum that provides the needed industry-based skills and knowledge for students.

Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) - 7 Acting Regional Director Exequiel R. Sarcauga said that it was a promising solution and the group was optimistic.

Sarcauga said they waited for the industry to respond by providing them with a copy of the module and ultimately, this will increase the industry hiring rate with a promise of more dialogues and linkages to follow facilitated by the Labor Tripartite Council in Education and DOLE-7. (FREEMAN)
