Teacher dies in cockfight

CEBU, Philippines -  An elementary school teacher died after he was hit several times with a gaff which was attached to the fighting cocks on Tuesday afternoon in Sitio San Isidro, Barangay Perrelos, Carcar City.

Fabiano Macasero, 53, of Barangay Liboron and a teacher of the Liboron Elementary School, was believed to have been poisoned by the gaff.

He was rushed to the Carcar Emergency Hospital but was declared dead a few minutes later due to cuts on his right leg.

PO3 Vicente Garces said the barangay was celebrating their fiesta which was why cockfighting was allowed.

Macasero was in the area to bet on his fighting cock.

As Macasero’s fighting cock was set to fight, he personally took the fighting cock inside the arena but as he was about to put it down, the opponent’s fighting cock rushed towards him hitting Macasero’s right leg with its gaff and caused cuts.

“Siya na hinuon ang gisigihan og labok sa manok niigo didto sa iyang tiil ang tari ug pwerteng dugo-a,” Garces said.

He added that Macasero’s fighting cock rushed towards the victim and got the attention of the opponent.

Macasero’s fighting cock won. The attending physician tried to save the bleeding Macasero but he died due to loss of blood and was believed to have been poisoned by the gaff.

“Nakadaug tuod iyang manok apan siya maoy napildi,” Garces said. — (FREEMAN)
