CEBU, Philippines - High school students from 21 schools in Cebu joined the second day of The FREEMAN’s “Light A Star” lantern making contest yesterday.
Forty-one elementary schools participated in the first day of the contest the other day.
The on-the-spot lantern making was held at the MGB Social Hall at the fourth floor of the Star Group Building at the corner of D. Jakosalem and V. Gullas Streets. Like the elementary students, the high school contenders made their lanterns on the spot and with limited resources, using only recycled materials.
Each year level has its own set of contest mechanics, but both share the same goal of uncovering the talents of students in coming up with beautiful lantern out of seashells for the elementary participants and coconut tree for high school contenders.
The public can vote for their favorite lantern starting November 25, 2011 (Friday) for the selection of Top 10 lanterns for each category while final judging will be on December 2, 2011 (Friday). Winners will be announced five days later.
Photos of all entries will be published so readers can pick their favorites. Winners from each category will receive P15,000 cash. The second and third placers will get P10,000 and P7,000, respectively.
The rest will receive P3,000, while a special prize of P2,000 will be given for the readers’ choice. Five finalists will also receive P1,500 each.
Aside from enhancing their artistic sides, students were also taught the value of teamwork and the eye for things that may be reused. (FREEMAN)
