CEBU, Philippines - Danao City Vice Mayor Ramon “Nito” Durano III yesterday donated a one-hectare property in Barangay Dunggoan to the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology where a new city jail will be constructed.
Durano, on behalf of his family, signed the deed of donation with BJMP-7 director Senior Supt. Romeo Vio. The place will serve as the new site for the city jail to house the more than 200 inmates.
Fifth District Rep. Ramon “Red” Durano VI said he made representation with the BJMP central office to release an amount needed for the construction of the new city jail. However, the agency had a problem where to build the new facility prompting the congressman’s family to donate a portion of their property.
The present city jail is located at the ground floor of the old city hall building. The congressman wanted a new jail facility for the city because the present city jail is already congested.
According to the BJMP, the jail is only designed to house 100 inmates but there are already more than 200 inmates currently being detained in the facility.
Vio thanked the vice mayor for the donation and vowed to start the construction of the new jail soon. He said the BJMP has initially allocated P3 million for the project.
“Magpasalamat gayud kami ni Vice Mayor Nito sa ngalan sa kadagkuan sa BJMP sa Manila sa iyang gipakita nga kaayo aron matukod nato ang bag-ong bilangguan sa dakbayan sa Danao,” Vio said. (FREEMAN)
