Cutie: Support for flyover projects overwhelming

CEBU, Philippines - Signatures reportedly keep on coming from different barangays in Cebu City in support of the pending flyover projects of Cebu City North District Rep. Rachel “Cutie” del Mar.

Del Mar said due to the overwhelming number of signatures that come to them everyday she has already lost track as to how many have been gathered.

She clarified that these signatures are not to be submitted to the president or to anybody, rather these are for personal consumption because as a representative of the people she wants to know the people’s sentiments.

While Mayor Michael Rama wants to bring his opposition against the flyover to the President Benigno Aquino III, Del Mar said she has no plans to bothering the president.

“We’ve bothered the president a lot already. He has a very tight schedule so I do not want to add to his burden,” Del Mar said.

She said she trusts the Department of Public Works and Highways to decide on the matter having continuously heard the sides of both for and against the proposed flyovers projects.

“The DPWH here should be the one in charge,” she said, adding she also does not have plans to bring the matter to the DPWH Secretary.

The representative wants the two flyovers in M.J. Cuenco Ave. and Gorordo Ave. to start simultaneously.

She said she believes there will be no problem if both commence construction at the same because they are located in two different areas significantly distant from each other.

The projects are expected to be finished in eight to 10 months, she said.

Del Mar assured that the structure, specifically the wall, of the Asilo dela Milagrosa compound along Gorordo Ave. will not be touched by the construction.

She said she has already has the commitment of the DPWH-7 that adjustments will be made so the construction will not destroy any part of the heritage structure.

She said she hopes this will appease the apprehension of the nuns running the place.

Last Saturday, the nuns of the Asilo dela Milagrosa started holding dawn procession that will continue for the next eight consecutive Saturdays.

The dawn procession is hoped to enlighten the community, especially politicians, to realize that the flyover will destroy the solemnity of the church. — (FREEMAN)
