Speed limit delays measures to regulate use of SRP subway

CEBU, Philippines - The issue of speed limit has delayed the proposed ordinance seeking to regulate the use of the South Road Properties subway.

Cebu City Councilor Roberto “Bob” Cabarrubias yesterday presented his ordinance supposedly for final deliberation but the members of the City Council decided to defer it because of the several suggestions for inclusion.

The city legislators agreed a maximum speed limit of 60 kilometer per hour for all vehicles passing though the subway but the agreement was not mentioned in the proposed ordinance.

The proposed ordinance bans the tricycles, motorcycles, bicycles and other slow moving vehicles and those that are carrying explosives and flammable materials in the tunnel.

Cabarrubias said, pedestrians are also prohibited inside the tunnel to prevent accidents.

He expects that motorists who travel through the tunnel will drive fast, thus, it would be dangerous for slow-moving or small vehicles like motorcycles to pass there.

City Traffic Operations Management (CITOM) chairman Sylvan “Jack” Jakosalem said that Councilor Richard “Ritchie” Osmeña is already working for the purchase of the needed equipment like speed guns to regulate and monitor the speed limit of the vehicles passing through the subway.– (FREEMAN)
