CEBU, Philippines - A 63-year-old father died after his mentally disturbed son whipped him several times with a piece of bamboo inside their house in Barangay Matutinao, Badian Monday morning.
In a separate incident in Cebu City, an ex-convict was shot while he was inside a portable toilet near the old White Gold parking lot in Barangay Carreta, Cebu City yesterday noon.
In the Badian killing, Alfredo Orbena, a driver, was found lying lifeless by his wife at about 5:00 in the morning. He had wounds in his head and several cuts in different parts of his body.
Orbena was reportedly killed by his 26-year-old son, who is now detained at the Badian police stockade and is set to be taken to the Don Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center today for a psychiatric examination.
According to the police report, the son woke up early that morning and asked for food from his father. Alfredo handed his son a piece of bread but instead of eating, the son went wild and destroyed the bamboo split-flooring of their house.
Senior Inspector Almirante Bacayo, chief of the Badian Police Station, told The FREEMAN that the son was able to pull one bamboo split and started whipping his father and even slammed his father’s head on the floor.
“Hyperactive man gud ni siya kung musuol na iyang sakit unya tiil ra’y gikadinahan, free iyang kamot,” Bacayo said.
Alfredo’s wife was sleeping and did not notice the commotion.
The mother claimed that her son used to be a drug user, which had possibly caused his mental illness. The suspect also used to be a college scholar in one of the universities in Cebu City.
“Duna man nay ipa-inom unta pero tungod sa kapobre wala mahatagi og tambal,” Bacayo said.
The mother wanted to file a parricide case yesterday but Bacayo said they needed to secure first a medical certificate stating his mental condition when the crime was committed.
Meanwhile, a man was shot by three men onboard a motorcycle while he was inside a portable toilet near the old White Gold parking lot in Barangay Carreta, Cebu City yesterday noon.
Renaldo Mangco, according to witnesses, was about to close the toilet door when the still unidentified assailant shot him five times.
The gunman walked towards a motorcycle parked some 10 meters from the bloodied victim and fled with his companions.
Roberto Unadia, 56, saw the shooting. He said the assailant was following Mangco before shooting the victim.
Unadia said the assailant was standing three meters from the portable toilet while firing the shots.
A 12-year-old boy who witnessed the crime told The Freeman that there were two motorcycles which immediately fled seconds after the shooting.
Neighbors hired a jeepney to take Mangco to the Cebu City Medical Center where he is still recuperating.
The neighbors said Mangco had served 10 years in jail but investigators are still verifying this information.
The Cebu City Police Office Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) recovered four empty shells of a .45 caliber pistol, although the door of the portable toilet has seven bullet holes.
Stray bullets went through the plastic portable toilet and landed on the tents housing victims of the fire in Carreta last month.
Luckily, no one was hurt from among those occupying the tents. – (FREEMAN)
