Suicide attempt foiled after phone wire broke

- Ryan Christopher J. Sorote -

CEBU, Philippines - Jealousy prompted Raul Cerna, 38, of Barangay Ermita, Cebu City to commit suicide yesterday but he failed after the telephone wire he used broke. Cerna sustained contusions on his face after his face slammed on the floor at around 11:30 p.m.

Investigators said Cerna got jealous when he saw his live-in partner, a certain May-May chatting with a foreigner over the internet. Following the discovery, Cerna reportedly went home to his rented room in the said barangay where he tried to hang himself using a telephone wire.

The victim was rushed to Cebu City Memorial Medical Center for medical attention. Cerna is the very first recorded suicide attempt for the moth of September after more than five cases of suicide recorded in August.

Meanwhile, a 54-year-old grandpa believed to be suffering from a nervous breakdown died on Wednesday afternoon after hanging himself inside their house..

Marvyn Nudalo Olofernes of Barangay Consuelo, San Francisco town in Camotes Island hanged himself using an electrical cord that he tied around his neck.

Olofernes’ dead body was discovered by his wife, Gabriela, 51, at around 4 p.m. when she came from a monthly meeting at the daycare center where she worked.

According to Gabriela, her husband has suffering lately from “major depression syndrome” which she believed led to her husband’s nervous breakdown.

She however did not inform the police as to the reason of her husband’s depression. Marvyn was rushed to the Ricardo Maningo District Hospital but was declared dead on arrival. The attending physician discovered no signs of struggle anywhere on the victim’s body aside from strangulation marks on his neck. (FREEMAN)
