Giango: Dengue situation in province improves

-

CEBU, Philippines -  The number of dengue cases in the Province of Cebu is no cause for panic as it is not an alarming number, said Integrated Provincial Health Officer Dra. Cristina Giango.

Giango said that while the total number increased, it should also be noticed that compared to last year, the number of cases per month have steadily decreased, most especially in July.

In 2010, about 275 cases were reported in July but this year, only 86 were reported.

The IPHO has recorded 788 cases as of January to August 15 this year compared to 618 cases in August 2010.

Records showed there were 3,150 dengue cases last year. This year, there were only four dengue-related deaths in the first seven months of this year as compared to 33 dengue-related deaths in 2010.

This year, Danao City, which was fifth in the list last year, topped the number of cases with 136, followed by Talisay City with 65 which was seventh last year, and then by Minglanilla, 61; Balamban,57; San Fernando, 48; Consolacion, 36; Liloan, 35; Naga City, 33, Compostela, 32 and Bogo City, 24.

Last year, Minglanilla town topped the number of cases in the province at 288, followed by San Fernando, 238; then Naga City, 206.

The towns of Santa Fe in Bantayan Island and Boljoon, which were among the list of 49 municipalities and cities with dengue-related cases last year, were not in this year’s list.

“The public should continue cleaning the surroundings year round and not only when cases are high, kill breeding sites of mosquitoes and have the children undergo check-up at the health centers when dengue symptoms are observed,” said Giango as she reminded the public not to be complacent.

She also urged the public to be careful with water-borne diseases especially in this rainy season such as diarrhea, typhoid fever and leptospirosis.

The IPHO is always doing a year-round information drive through their rural health centers in each city and municipality.
