Gov to receive 2 awards; Sugbo TV gets 4 CAMMA nominations

CEBU, Philippines - For organizing the Cebu Provincial Anti-Illegal Fishing Task Force, the Philippine Navy has awarded Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia the “Gawad Sa Kaunlaran”.

“By this extraordinary achievement, Gov. Garcia significantly contributed towards the protection of our Mother Earth, the rich marine environment surrounding Cebu Province, and the lasting admiration and gratitude of the Filipino people, the Philippine Navy and the Armed Forces of the Philipines,” reads the General Order issued by Headquarters PN.

They also took note of the governor’s efforts to eradicate illegal fishing in Cebu by coming up with a covenant to preserve the maritime environment in the coastal waters and enjoining the regional line agencies, national law enforcement agencies, Integrated Bar of the Philippines and the local government units.

The Philippine Navy also mentioned the governor’s pursuit of having uniform goals to conserve and protect maritime environment by enforcing the Operational Plan “Sagop Baybayon.”

“Despite the long period to win this war against these illegal activities, Gov. Garcia is still committed to take an active role to fully enforce anti-illegal fishing laws and ordinances all throughout Cebu Province to make its coastal waters as a productive ecosystem,” it further states.

The Gawad Sa Kaunlaran is awarded by the Chief of Staff of the AFP, Area Command and Major Service Commanders to any citizen of the Philippines, for meritorious and valuable achievements in the pursuit of socio-economic and other non-combat activities.

It is also for exceptional service which contributed immensely in accomplishing the peaceful objectives of the AFP, or in improving the quality of life of the people within the military establishment.

Elizabeth Francia, the chief of staff of the Office of the Governor, said that the formal awarding will be held in October yet.

Meanwhile, Garcia will also receive the first HAMBIN Award for being the most distinguished personality in the field of culture and the arts.

HAMBIN (Hamiling Binilin) is borne of the Graduate Certificate Course in Cebuano Heritage Studies of the University of San Carlos and has spearheaded regular lectures of Sugbuanon culture and history since the year 2007.

The awarding will be held on Saturday, August 27, 2011 at the Cathedral Museum in Cebu City in connection with the fourth anniversary of Hamiling Binilin, Inc.

Also, for the first time, four of the television shows of Capitol’s Sugbo TV were chosen as finalists to the 15th Cebu Archdiocesan Mass Media Awards (CAMMA) on Sunday, August 28 at SM Cinema 1, Cebu City.

The shows include “Waste Management” for best in TV plugs; “Deaf Mute Valedictorian” for best in TV special events/feature; “Kabilin” for best in TV Magazine Show and “Balita sa Sugbo” for best in TV News Program. —(FREEMAN)
