City issues warning against quarry operator

CEBU, Philippines - The city government has stepped into the problem of illegal quarry operations in Barangay Binaliw.

City Administrator Jose Mari Poblete said a warning has been issued against the quarry operator. Members of the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) personally went to sitio Binaliw 3 after receiving reports of the operation from no less than Barangay Captain Wilson Bacor.

The CENRO personnel even caught a cargo truck hauling limestone from the quarry site and the truck’s driver was ordered to unload the cargo.

Bacor said they were prompted to seek the help of the city government after the quarry operator, a certain Raul Diano, allegedly ignored the cease and desist order issued by the barangay.

Bacor said they were alarmed about the activity because of its potential to cause a landslide especially during heavy rains. The activity is reportedly being done above an area occupied by residential houses.

Investigation showed that those who get limestone from the quarry site would allegedly pay to Diano. The limestone is reportedly being used to fill potholes in different barangays in the city. (FREEMAN)
