Shooting in Toledo, San Fernando

CEBU, Philippines - One was killed and another was injured in separate shooting incidents in Toledo City and San Fernando last Tuesday.

In Toledo, police found Bernard Canales, 36, at 8pm in Barangay Puting-Bato already sprawled on the ground with two gunshot wounds on his forehead and chin. His neighbors rushed him to the Toledo District Hospital, but he was declared dead on arrival. Canales is a native of Bantayan Island.

Investigation revealed Canales went home drunk that night and had an argument with his wife. He also allegedly challenged his wife and the latter’s relatives to a fight and messed up the kitchen utensils. He was shot when he went out of the house.

Chief Inspector Jovito Canlapan said they recovered two empty shells and a bullet of a caliber .45 pistol. A manhunt operation is in order for the arrest of the still unidentified suspect.

Canales’s remains now lie at the St. Peter Funeral Homes.

Meanwhile, in San Fernando town, a 33-year-old minibus driver cheated death when the bullet fired by a multicab driver missed him. The bullet merely grazed the side of Roed Cabrera, a resident of Barangay San Isidro. The multicab driver was identified as Carry Urot, a resident of Barangay Perrelos, Carcar City.

Investigation showed that Cabrera was driving his minibus with plate number GWW 904 towards Cebu City. At around 9am, Urot allegedly flagged the minibus in sitio Lakaron and shot Cabrera saying, “Isoga nimo atong usang adlaw uy.”

Urot then left hurried on board his multicab. Cabrera, for his part, went to the Naga Police Station and reported the incident.

Police found a deformed slug inside Cabrera’s minibus and later recovered Urot’s multicab in sitio Campaig, Barangay Pitalo.

SPO1 Francisco Salubre of the San Fernando Police said a personal grudge stemming from a previous altercation on traffic rules was the motive behind the shooting. “Lalis sa dalan ang giawayan,” he said.

Salubre explained that the bullet was not able to create much explosion most possibly because of moistened gun powder.

“Basta dugay na ang bala mag-umog man gud nang pulbura, dili ta mutuo anang katingalahan,” Salubre said. — (FREEMAN)
