Cargo ship catches fire in Mandaue

CEBU, Philippines - A cargo vessel owned by the Carlos Gothong Lines Inc. was damaged when a fire hit its engine room while on anchorage at the Gothong Private wharf at the Reclamation area in Mandaue city.

 SFO2 Roy Garcia of the Mandaue City Fire Department said they received the fire alarm at 11:35 pm last Wednesday from the crew of MV Ozamiz Bay1.

But when the firemen arrived at the scene, the fire was already contained by the ship’s crew using their fire extinguishers.

 Garcia said a short circuit caused the fire as the crew saw that wires leading to a motor pump located at the engine room sparked.

 Damage was pegged at P35,000. — (FREEMAN)
