Top official "scolds" Cebu City police

CEBU, Philippines - Several Cebu City policemen were scolded by Senior Superintendent Louie Oppus, deputy regional director for operation of the Police Regional Office 7, in an inspection of the different police stations in Cebu City last Saturday.

But Oppus denied he maltreated some officers during the inspection.

He said he wants to implement disciplinary action on policemen whom he found wearing incomplete uniforms. Some of them were not wearing their uniforms at all.

Oppus said he only wants to change the attitudes of the policemen and make them proud of who and what they are.

“I would like Cebu City policemen to be proud of themselves and we should improve because the city is improving,” Oppus said in a phone interview.

The inspection on the 11 police stations was part of the directive of Police Regional Office 7 Director Ager Ontog.

Oppus said he is pushing for discipline among the police and wants every station chief and officer to do his part for improvement.

“We have to strive for improvement kay we are the Queen City of the South, and we try to lift up our policemen. There should be a lesson to be learned,” he told The FREEMAN.

Oppus added he approached the policemen in a “positive way” to implement a transformation program.

For his part, Ontog said he directed Oppus to conduct the inspection to intensify police visibility due to the series of crimes that happened.

“Normal na if may incidents as part of my supervision that every policemen must be ready,” he said, refusing to comment on the issue of maltreatment.
