CEBU, Philippines - Two men repeatedly shot a mechanic in Tagunol, Barangay Basak-Pardo late last Sunday afternoon.

Christopher Canoy, 31, died after sustaining six gunshot wounds. The suspects were identified as Manolito Labor and a certain Utol.

Canoy, a resident of sitio Katangkongan in the said barangay, was playing basketball with some friends around 5:30 pm when the suspects approached and shot him point blank. Canoy still managed to run towards the house of one Nicomedes Algaba, but the suspects followed him and continued shooting before eventually fleeing the place.

The victim was rushed to the Cebu City Medical Center where he was subjected to an immediate surgical operation, but he eventually passed away at 2:35 am yesterday.

Police from the Pardo Police Station pursued the suspects but failed to arrest them.

Five empty shells of a caliber .45 pistol and two deformed slugs were recovered from Algaba’s house while two other empty shells were recovered from the basketball court.

Homicide investigator Ruth Violango said Canoy’s neighbors see the man as kind and reportedly never had any known enemies.

“Di sila makaingon nga naa’y atraso kay buotan gyud daw nang bataa. Posible naalaan ra na siya, kapareha siya ug nawong sa kaaway atong mga suspek,” Violango said.

Labor, a resident of sitio Exobel Tagunol, is reportedly a known “toughie” at their area.

Meanwhile, in Compostela town, a teenager was shot dead by unidentified men on board a motorcycle last Sunday evening.

Neil “Negro” Fernandez of sitio Aggies was about to buy a beer at a sari-sari store when the gunman shot him on the head.

Residents rushed him to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City but he was declared dead on arrival.

Police Officer 2 Ronald Luna, Compostela police investigator, said Fernandez was drinking with his friends at that time. When they ran out of liquor, Fernandez went to the store to buy beer when the motorcycle ridden by the suspects stopped behind him.

No evidence was reportedly recovered from the crime scene, the police said.

“Possible nga suya-suya siguro ni kay dili ma ni apil ug fraternity bataa,” Luna said. A witness reportedly saw the suspects, but could not identify the motorcycle used.

Fernandez’s remains now lie at the Maturan Funeral Homes in Liloan town. (FREEMAN)
