No non-performing maritime, nursing schools in Region-7

- Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon -

CEBU, Philippines - No maritime or nursing schools in Central Visayas have been issued a cease and desist order by the Commission on Higher Education because of low performance rating.

The clarification was issued yesterday by CHED-7 assistant director Candelario Aytona following the statement of the commission’s chairperson Dr. Patricia Licuanan that she has already ordered non performing higher learning institutions to stop offering maritime and nursing courses this school year.

Aytona said no schools in Cebu and in the entire Central Visayas have been covered by the cease and desist order. He explained that most of the learning institutions in the region, especially in Cebu, are doing well in nursing and maritime courses.

In fact, Central Visayas has produced several topnotchers not only in nursing and maritime courses but in other courses as well.

“Impossible na nga ma-isyuhan og cease and desist order specifically ang maritime and nursing schools nato kay maayo man ta ug performance. We even produce a lot of topnotchers,” Aytona said.

Aytona however noted the decline in the enrollment of nursing not just in Cebu or in the region but in the entire country. He however failed to provide the reason why and the percentage by which it has decreased.

Licuanan earlier announced that her office has issued cease and desist order against higher learning institutions especially those who are offering nursing and maritime courses with a below par performance rating. She however did not reveal the names of the schools.

The country has 1,726 higher education institutions, wherein 203 of these are public schools – a state university or college.  (FREEMAN)
