Female cop's gun kills hubby in spat

CEBU, Philippines - A policewoman was arrested after she accidentally shot and killed her husband in the middle of their dispute in Barangay Alegria, Cordova town late Friday night.

Police Officer 1 Chona Amoren, 28, reportedly prompted to shoot her husband, Elmar Amoren, also 28, when the latter, who was already drunk, tried to hurt her and their daughter.

According to the report, the suspect, who is assigned at the Operations Branch of the Lapu-Lapu City Police Office, was already sleeping at the bedroom together with their five-year-old daughter when she was awakened by her husband’s noise.

Elmar, who was unemployed, was drinking liquor inside their house with his cousins. He reportedly kept on calling Chona, which woke her up. She then went out of the room.

As soon as she went outside, Elmar was throwing clothes and hit her face. He also threw a cellular phone which hit his wife’s hand.

Their child was also awakened by the noise and was about to get up when Elmar pushed her. Elmar then took his wife’s service firearm from a drawer, which led to a scuffle between them.

Because he was drunk, Chona was able to get the firearm, a caliber .38 revolver, from him. The gun went off and hit Elmar on the stomach.

PO2 Manfred Maarat of the Cordova Police Station said it appeared that the shooting was just an accident.

Chona rushed her husband to the Mactan Doctors Hospital in Lapu-lapu City and was declared dead at 9:30 a.m. yesterday, Maarat said.

Chona voluntarily surrendered to the Cordova Police. She also turned over her gun, which contained four bullets. The gun was submitted at the Regional Crime Laboratory 7 for ballistic examination.

Maarat said that Chona, who has served as a police officer for around five years now, is detained in their detention cell.

But Maarat said she will soon be released after the victim’s family did not manifest interest to file any case against her, acknowledging that it was an accidental firing. — /JPM
