CEBU, Philippines - More than 100 volunteers from the Mandaue-Host Lion’s Club (MHLC) and Barangay Tisa, Cebu City have gathered their shovels, rakes, sacks, and broomsticks and cleaned together the Buhisan River yesterday morning.
MHLC President Robert Fookson said they have initiated the cleanup drive to strengthen their advocacy towards the protection of natural resources. The activity is part of their environment friendly programs, he added.
Aside from cleanup drive, the group also taught the residents on the proper segregation of garbage. Fookson said they have see to it that before the garbage are collected, the biodegradable are already segregated from the non-biodegradable ones. Fookson stressed it is essential to maintain cleanliness in the surroundings as it is the best way to stop the spread of viral diseases.
Tisa barangay captain Teresita Cabulao said they are very thankful for MHLC’s initiative to conduct a cleanup drive in the creeks of Buhisan.
Cabulao shared all the 72 sitios in her barangay have sent their representatives during the cleanup drive in support of MHLC’s initiative.
According to her, they also distributed reading materials to residents that would educate them in proper garbage disposal, proper segregation, and the ban of untimely disposal of garbage. She said this is with accordance with the City Ordinance 1361 and 2031.
At least 40 sacks of garbage were collected and segregated during the cleanup.(FREEMAN NEWS)
