Valedictorians told: Lead by example

- Kenneth B. Pael -

CEBU, Philippines - Governor Gwendolyn Garcia yesterday shared her knowledge on good leadership to more than 200 valedictorians during a forum at the Capitol yesterday morning.

“A leader should lead by example…Let your actions show your work, not your words,” Garcia said.

The open forum is part of the ongoing leadership training of valedictorians from the public high schools in the province.

She said it is important for a leader to move and not just sit commanding his or her constituents.

The governor also said a leader must give more than what is required from him or her. She said that while working hours are only limited to eight hours a day if you are really committed to your job, you would give even work “25 hours until the work is done.”

She also said a leader must also be open to criticism. However, she cautioned the valedictorians that some criticisms are really meant to destroy your reputation and should be ignored.

Most importantly, Garcia said every leader should have the “heart” to persevere through the challenges that a leader will face.

She said this matters even in the little things like walking through the scorching heat of the sun, going to the most far-flung areas, staying in the office during the late hours and even facing people out to destroy your name.

Joanne Ramos, a valedictorian from Mandaue City, said she learned a lot from the governor in order for her to be a good leader someday.
