CEBU, Philippines - An environmental organization has urged the public to help protect the environment.
In a gathering yesterday morning, 350.org presented a dance in front of the office of the Department of Energy-7 along Osmeña Boulevard, Cebu City.
The members of the group come from different schools in the city such as University of Cebu (UC), University of San Carlos (USC), St. Theresa’s College, among others.
Rey Ouano, 350 organization executive head at USC, said they wanted the people to come up with a solution to the environmental problems.
With a theme “Lenten Earth Day Action: Call for Low Carbon Economy and Sustainable Communities,” participants presented an earth dance in the form of Capoeira.
Capoeira is a Brazillian dance art form that combines elements of martial arts, sports and music. It is a ritual dance in a form of a prayer that aims to express love for Mother Nature.
During the event, some youths also tied Earth Ribbons (white/green/blue ribbons) on trees along Osmeña Boulevard.
The group urged the public to refrain from using unnecessary electricity, minimize the use of jeepneys, buses and cars, and reduce garbage output.
It called for the reduction of CO2 in the atmosphere from its current level of 392 parts per million to below 350 parts per million.
With a mission to build a global grassroots movement to solve the climate crisis, the group was founded by US author Bill McKibben. — Deborah Mae C. Fortich and (FREEMAN)
