DILG creates Regional Economic Transformation Team

CEBU, Philippines - The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) 7 will create the Regional Economic Transformation Team (RETT) that will assist local government units (LGUs) in implementing economic initiatives.

On this, the DILG has as partner the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) which provides funding for the implementation of local governance support programs for local economic development (LED).

The RETT is an eight-year joint program of the Government of Canada and the Philippines in “strengthening the enabling environment for good governance and supporting sustainable economic development.”

DILG-7 Local Government Operation Officer Ammie Marie Generale said the DILG and CIDA already made a LED framework that suggests alternative mechanism for National Government agencies to assist LGUs in the operation of their economic development programs.

Generale shared that RETT will provide “efficient and effective methods for proper governance” which is essential in the success of the programs the LGUs will conduct.

Generale added the RETT will also give support in other significant aspects such as financial assistance and capacity-building.

She is confident that the RETT will be able to assist all LGUs in their economic activities and that this will result in sustainable local economic activities.

The DILG, though, is still drafting the memorandum of agreement that will be signed by the DILG, CIDA and the National Economic Development Authority for the program’s specifics. — (FREEMAN)
