9 caught for illegal fishing

- Carissa Mae R. Quillo -

CEBU, Philippines - Nine fishermen were arrested in the Municipality of Compostela after they were caught fishing using fine mesh nets, a violation of the Philippine Fisheries Code, at around 2 p.m. last Saturday.

Fernan Abadia, Joebert Almerez, Randy Razon, Roldan De los Reyes, Jason Casac, Arturo Bohol, Gilbert Laude, Eusibio Nodalo, and Randy Sala are all residents of Sitio Taboc, Barangay Looc, Danao City.

The fishermen were arrested by a team from Compostela Police Station composed of PO2 Arni Cañete, PO1 Virgil Chua and Municipal Agriculture Officer Mardimito Dingal. Fishwardens Silvestre Sonido, Abraham Paradiang and Nestor Morre also joined the seaborne patrol.

Confiscated were four fine mesh nets, around 20 kilos of fish with an estimated value of P1, 500, two pieces of spears and three pumpboats.

The nine fishermen are detained at the Compostela Police Station waiting for charges to be file against them.

The use of fine mesh nets is prohibited under Section 89 of the Fisheries Code because it catches small fish.

Authorities around Cebu Provinces have strengthened their campaign against illegal fishing after Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia created the Provincial Anti-Illegal Fishing Task Force. — (FREEMAN)
