Two killed in road accidents
CEBU, Philippines - Two were killed in separate vehicular accidents in Bogo City and in the town of San Fernando.
Yesterday morning, Carlos Villegas, 24, a vendor, died after a speeding minibus hit him along the national highway in Sitio Lakaron, Barangay Pitalo, San Fernando. The victim, a resident of Barangay Pañas, Dalaguete, was declared dead on arrival at South General Hospital due to severe head injury.
Police said Villegas was hit by a Mitsubishi Canter minibus marked “Inday Jean,” bearing plate numbers GWC 134 driven by Crisanto Paran, 45.
The victim, a vendor at Carbon Public Market in Cebu City was allegedly boarding another bus on his way home but decided to disembark to urinate.
But while he was about to cross the road, the speeding Mitsubishi Canter, which was traveling towards Cebu City, suddenly hit him. Because of the impact, the victim was allegedly thrown a few meters away before his head hit the road that caused severe injuries.
PO1 Lauro Laurel said Paran claimed he applied the brakes but it was already too late and hit Villegas.
Paran is now detained at San Fernando police stockade while the minibus he was driving is already in the custody of the police.
Laurel said relatives of the victim and the operator of the minibus plan to settle the incident amicably.
In Bogo City, a 74-year-old woman was killed after she was hit by a motorcycle driven by a 13-year-old along Bogo-Nailon provincial road Sunday afternoon.
Celerina Gilig, a resident of Sitio Panabilan, Barangay Nailon was rushed by her husband to Don Verallo Hospital. She was later referred to a hospital in Cebu City but died along the way due to severe head injury.
The victim was allegedly crossing the road when she was suddenly hit by a blue Honda Wave motorcycle, bearing plate numbers GU-8498, driven by the minor suspect.
SPO2 Rogel Layson said that Gilig was slammed to the road resulting to her head injury.
“Dili na siguro ni siya (Gilig) ka-klaro unya nilabang nga wala kabantay,” he said.
The minor suspect was apprehended but was later turned over to his parents because he could be charged criminally under the Juvenile Justice law.
Meanwhile, man was found dead with a gunshot wound to his face early morning yesterday in Barangay Pulangbato. The fatality, whose identity is still not confirmed, was wearing a white T-shirt, denims and slippers when he was found.
An identification card was found in his possession bears the name of one Victoriano Dela Cerna, 57, of San Fernando town. He was believed to be a taxi driver because of his clothes. (FREEMAN)
