City dads clash on Kasambagan casino

- Garry B. Lao -

CEBU, Philippines - Councilors Augustus Pe and Sisinio Andales clashed on the issue of an internet casino in Barangay Kasambagan.

During yesterday’s session of the City Council, Andales argued that the Council cannot approve the operation of Queen City E-Gaming Corporation along Paseo Phase 2 in Barangay Kalunasan because no public hearing was conducted in this regard. The casino is accredited by the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor).

But Pe said a public hearing is no longer necessary because all necessary documents have been complied with and pertinent fees have been paid for. The Council’s committee on games, amusements and sports has also approved the casino’s operation.

Andales insisted that a public hearing is still necessary even with the committee’s approval. He said the casino should not be made to operate until the Council’s committee on laws can study the matter further.

“We might be charged nga nagpabaya mi aning gambling. We need the sentiments of the public,” Andales said. The Council did not act on the issue, as Pe eventually gave in, but the councilor did not hide his disappointment. He was even heard saying, “last nalang gyud ka ha.”

After the session, Andales told reporters he also wants to find out if Barangay Kalunasan itself conducted a public hearing on the issue. He said no documentary proof on this regard was attached to the resolution.

In its report, the committee said an internet casino station will create opportunities for revenue generation and will serve as a deterrent to illegal gambling. The committee, however, emphasized that the station must not be placed in an area occupied by schools.   (FREEMAN)
