Liquor ban during IBP election

CEBU, Philippines - Regional Trial Court Executive Judge Meinrado Paredes announced that there shall be a “liquor ban” before and during the election of the new set of officers of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines Cebu City and Cebu Province chapters.

In a meeting with the current officials of the IBP-Cebu City chapter yesterday, Paredes reminded all lawyers that the election should serve as model of election that should be conducted in a free, orderly, honest and credible manner.

“Let this election be a reflection of the kind of organization that you have. There shall be a liquor ban before and during the elections,” said Paredes.

He however said it is alright for the winners to have a celebration and a drinking spree outside of the Palace of Justice compound after the winners are announced.

Paredes cited incidents in the past IBP elections wherein some candidates treated lawyers to expensive restaurants in exchange for their votes.

He claimed he also received reports that some candidates pay the monthly dues of other lawyers to gain their support.

Paredes said such practices are no different to the deeds of traditional politicians or “trapos.”

The election of the new sets of officials for the IBP Cebu City and Cebu province chapters will be held simultaneously on February 26.

Paredes is hoping the new IBP officials will help the courts especially in improving the filing system. (FREEMAN)
