Tanod kills driver

- Niña G. Sumacot-Abenoja -

CEBU, Philippines - Two men died after they were shot in separate areas of Cebu City yesterday.

Trisikad driver Ulimpio Baguio, Jr., 42, died after he was shot in the chest by barangay tanod Noel Gonzales at Garfield St., Barangay Pahina-San Nicolas yesterday morning.

PO3 Ruth Violango of the Homicide Section said the victim, a resident of Barangay Suba, was sleeping inside a parked passenger jeepney at 9 a.m. yesterday when he was shot by the barangay tanod.

The victim was rushed to the Cebu City Medical Center and died an hour later.

Responding policemen conducted a hot pursuit operation but failed to arrest the suspect.

Violango said Baguio and Gonzales figured in a verbal tussle last week, the most possible reason behind the attack.

In a separate incident, an unidentified man was found dead with a gunshot wound on his head at Ermita Proper, Barangay Ermita at past 3 p.m. yesterday.

The body is now at the St. Francis Funeral Homes. No one came forward to identify him but a residence certificate found in his pocket bears the name of one Zaldy Silvano, a resident of Barangay Bulacao.

He was wearing a striped blue and white T-shirt and denims when he was found sprawled on the ground about 150 meters away from the barangay hall, said Homicide Section investigator SPO3 Rey Cuyos.

A tattoo on his back reads “Tata Arellano.” Other marks were “Bunso” and “X Flores” found on the right side of his chest.

Cuyos said they tried to get information from residents at the area but no one was willing to cooperate. (FREEMAN)
