Two government volunteers killed

- Ria Mae Y. Booc -

CEBU, Philippines - A member of the Cebu City’s Barangay Intelligence Network was stabbed dead yesterday morning after responding to a hold-up at barangay Pari-an, Cebu City.

Meanwhile, a volunteer of the Market Operation Division of the Cebu City Hall was shot dead early morning near Traveller’s Inn, corner Manalili and El Filibusterismo Sts., barangay Ermita, Cebu City.

In Pari-an, victim Alberto Garciano, 54, a watch repair man from M.J. Cuenco Ave., barangay Tinago died from a stab wound in the chest. He did not reach the Cebu City Medical Center (CCMC) alive.

Police Officer 2 Edario Manatad said that Garciano was bound home from the Cebu City Central School where his child is studying.

Garciano was onboard a jeepney with 01K route when one of the passengers complained that she lost her valuables.

When the jeepney was nearing Colon St., Garciano called the attention of a man who hurriedly disembarked and confronted him.

The two had an argument. The man then stabbed Garciano in the chest and fled. Garciano managed to send a text message to his colleague, asking for help.

A team from the mobile patrol from barangay San Nicolas passed by the area and took Garciano to the CCMC where he was declared dead.

Police Chief Inspector Bonifacio Garciano, chief of the Theft and Robbery Section of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO), is still waiting for the robbery victim to appear in their office so they could get her statement.

Garciano assures to have a close coordination with the homicide investigator to solve the case immediately.

Manatad added that their only problem is how to locate the victim.

In another incident, a volunteer of the City Hall’s Market Operations Division was shot dead early yesterday morning near the Traveller’s Inn at the corner of Manalili and El Filibusterismo Sts., barangay Ermita, Cebu City.

The victim, who sustained a gunshot wound in the head, was identified as Reneboy Sanchez, 24, of Jakosalem St., barangay Sto. Niño.

Senior Police Officer 1 Jay Eballe of the CCPO’s Homicide Section said that Sanchez was sleeping outside the inn when an unidentified man shot him.

A witness said she heard two bursts of gunfire. When she checked, she saw Sanchez with a wound in the head.

The police did not see any empty shell or slug but Manatad claimed that a personal grudge could be the motive behind the shooting. (FREEMAN)
