Man hacks wife in Aloguinsan

- Ria Mae Y. Booc -

CEBU, Philippines - A 53-year-old woman was hacked by her husband who also hacked himself at sitio Kanlaguno, barangay Poblacion, Aloguinsan yesterday dawn.

The victim, who suffered lacerated wounds in her head and upper left cheek was identified as Martina Cañete, 53. She was rushed to the Pinamungajan District Hospital but later referred to Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC).

Her husband, Quirino Cañete, 53, sustained a wound in the neck. He was arrested and detained in the Aloguinsan police stockade.

PO2 Eugene Tabuada of Aloguinsan Police Station disclosed that the couple and their two children were sleeping when Quirino suddenly woke up and grabbed an improvised bolo from their kitchen.

Martina woke up and saw Quirino pointing the bolo at her, yelling.

Their daughter, Maricris, attempted to grab the bolo but Quirino hacked his wife twice. Quirino tried to hack himself while Maricris ran to the neighbors for help.

Tabuada said the bolo was not that sharp so Quirino’s wound was not deep.

“Dumpol man ang bolo wala kaayo makasamad pero ang asawa medyo grabe tungod sa kakusog sa pagluba,” Tabuada told The Freeman. (The wife, though, suffered more from the blow.)

Quirino was also taken to the district hospital by the responding police officers before he was jailed.

According to their daughter, Cecilia, their father had a mental problem several years ago.

Police officers are now waiting for the family to complain for the appropriate filing of charges against the victim. –(FREEMAN)
