Road mishaps kill 2, injure 2

CEBU, Philippines - Two people died while two others were injured Sunday following separate vehicular accidents in Dalaguete and Naga.

Verinico Osorno, 34, of Sitio Butong, Barangay Coro, Dalaguete died in the hospital because of severe head injury while his back rider Ryan Bengcoleta of Barangay Mantalongon was seriously injured after their motorcycle fell off the cliff along the national highway in Sitio Paling-Paling, Barangay Obo, Dalaguete at 4:00 a.m. Sunday.

The two were negotiating a curve portion of the national highway when Osorno lost control of the motorcycle because the road was reportedly wet. They were thrown off the motorcycle and plunged into a portion of the 200-meter ravine.

Had it not because of a tree, the duo would have completely fell into the deep ravine. Osorno and Bengcoleta, despite their injuries, were able to climb on the top of the cliff where they were rescued by a mini ambulance.

They were immediately brought to the Dalaguete District Hospital but Osorno was declared dead on arrival. Bengcoleta suffered fractured right ribs and was referred to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center.

One hour later, 23-year-old Cesario Villahermosa also died after his motorcycle rammed a concrete electric post in Barangay Inayagan, Naga. Villahermosa was driving an XRM motorcycle from the south direction when the accident happened.

Investigation shows that Villahermosa was traveling at high speed when he lost control of the motorcycle and swerved right hitting Adonis Labajo, 21, who was just sitting outside a store along the highway, before he slammed on a concrete post.

Bystanders rushed Villahermosa to a nearby South General Hospital but he was declared dead on arrival. Police investigation further shows that Villahermosa was driving under the influence of liquor. (FREEMAN NEWS)
