"Lantaka" wounds man in Tabunok

CEBU, Philippines - A 44-year-old man sustained a wound on the foot after a neighbor in sitio Nonoc, Tabunok, Talisay City allegedly shot him Sunday with an improvised cannon commonly known as "lantaka."

Loreto Pacubas, single, was taken to the Talisay District Hospital in barangay San Isidro.

Based on the initial investigation conducted by the Talisay City Police, Pacubas was on his way back home on foot when neighbor Cosare Baltazar allegedly aimed his cannon at Pacubas and fired. Baltazar as of press time has remained at large.

Police have yet to determine the motive for the attack.

Lantaka, which has  become a fad among kids and adults alike, is reportedly safe and a cheap noisemaker than the traditional firecrackers.

It is more often than not made from PVC pipes or empty softdrink cans joined together. Denatured alcohol is poured into the can and lighted to create a blast.

The homemade cannon is banned in Talisay City after a six-year-old boy died from it last year.

As of yesterday, four cannons of different sizes were confiscated. (THE FREEMAN)
