CEBU, Philippines - Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia has distributed a total of P10 million financial assistance as Capitol’s Christmas gift to the five provincial leagues.

Each of the leagues of the Municipal Mayors, Vice Mayors, Councilors, Barangay Captains and Sangguniang Kabataan in Cebu will get P2 million to finance various projects that have impact to the taxpayers.

The presidents of the five leagues received the cash assistance from Garcia during the general assembly of all barangay captains in the province.

The league presidents are Dumanjug Mayor Nelson Garcia for the Liga ng mga Mayor sa Pilipinas, Toledo City Vice Mayor Arlene Zambo for the Vice Mayors League, Carmen Remedios Durano-Meca for the Councilors League, Jose Ribomapil Holganza, Jr. for the barangay and Aladin Willyamie Caminero for SK.

The league presidents assured Garcia that the money will be spent to projects that are beneficial to all their members.

It was the second time for LMP, VMLP and PCL to get the same amount from the Capitol.

Meanwhile, the Capitol yesterday entered into a memorandum of agreement with the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation for the enrollment of the 1,066 barangay captains in the province under the individually paying members category of Philhealth.

Philhealth vice president for the Visayas William Chavez said that the program is the first in the entire country where the local government unit sponsored the coverage of Philhealth of all barangay captains.

In 2006, the Province of Cebu launched the Philhealth Indigency Program which up to now, almost a million indigent families are already enrolled with Philhealth.

Cebu is the only LGU in the country that has enrolled the biggest number of indigent families. (THE FREEMAN)
