Vice Mayor pushes pay hike for day care workers

CEBU, Philippines – Vice Mayor Joy Augutus Young, chairman of the City Council's committee on education, wants to increase the honorarium of day care workers in the city.

Young said giving day care workers honorarium would strengthen and institutionalize their job, as it would upgrade their status and change their reference from "day care workers" to "day care teachers."

Young told reporters that 250 day care center workers deserve to receive an additional honorarium because of their sacrifices and the quality service they provide in nurturing children in local communities.

Day care workers currently receive only P3,000 per month. Young wants to increase the honorarium to P6,000.

A day care worker singlehandedly attend to about 50 pre-school children per class everyday. One worker handles two classes daily, one in the morning and another in the afternoon. (FREEMAN)
