CEBU, Philippines – A man died on the spot after he was run over by a vehicle at the Airport Road, Pusok, Lapu-Lapu City at about 5:20 in the morning yesterday.
The victim was identified as Julito Hernandez, 28, a resident of barangay Canduman, Mandaue City.
He suffered from several injuries and a severe wound in the head.
He was walking towards the Mactan Marina Mall when he was hit and dragged by a speeding Nissan Urvan bearing plate number YHW 478 driven by Adonis Abing, 32, a resident of Saac 1, barangay Buaya.
The vehicle ran over his body.
Hernandez came from the Waterfront Hotel at Mactan Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) to fetch his live-in partner Leah Elecion, a security guard of the hotel.
Elecion told him to wait at Mactan Marina Mall since it was still early and her duty would end at 7:00 in the morning yet.
While Hernandez was heading towards the mall the vehicle suddenly swerved in his direction.
Due to the impact he was dragged and ran over, hitting his head on the pavement.
Abing surrendered to the responding officers of the Airport Police and was turned over to the Lapu-Lapu City Police Station. He is now detained in the police stockade.
According to Elecion, she was able to monitor discussions about a vehicular accident in her hand-held radio so she immediately called her husband's mobile phone.
But she was surprised when another person answered telling her that the owner of the phone was already dead as pronounced by the paramedics of Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation (ERUF).
"Nakuyawan ko nga siya, unya siya man jud diay," she said.
She said they were planning to attend a mass that day since it was also the birthday of their child.
PO1 Jhon Philip Silmaro told The FREEMAN that Abing was negative of liquor when subjected to a liquor test.
The victim was taken to the Cosmopolitan Funeral Homes while Abing will face reckless imprudence resulting in homicide. (FREEMAN)
