Two men killed in road accidents
CEBU, Philippines - Two men died in two separate road accidents in Santander and Liloan towns on Thursday.
In Santander, the fatality was identified as Mansueto Cerencio, 74, a resident of Barangay Liloan. He was walking along the national highway in Barangay Looc when swept aside by a speeding bus around 5:40pm. He suffered wounds and bruises on his head and body.
He was rushed to the Oslob District Hospital, but was declared dead on arrival.
PO2 Noel Estender of the Santander Police said the victim was walking towards Barangay Looc from barangay Liloan when the incident happened. Roel Cabanasmanos, 35, the driver of the Sunrays bus with plate number GWR 992, was subsequently arrested at his residence.
Estender said a test proved Cabanasmanos to be under the influence of liquor at the time of the incident. He is facing charges for reckless imprudence resulting to homicide.
About two hours later in the northern town of Liloan, a motorcycle driver died on the spot after he was hit by a mini bus along the national highway in Barangay Cotcot.
Dr. Francis de la Cuesta, municipal health officer of Liloan, said victim Juciano Canamucan, 50, a resident of Barangay Basak, Compostela sustained fractures on the neck, legs and injuries on the head and chest.
SPO2 Marcelino Servilla said the mini bus bearing plate number GWN 306 driven by Beinvenido Capuyan Jr. was travelling north while the motorcycle bearing plate number IJ-1300 driven by Canamucan was heading south.
Upon reaching the end of Cotcot Bridge, the mini bus allegedly swerved away from its lane and hit the motorcycle in the process.
Canamucan was thrown off the motorcycle and died instantly. Capuyan voluntarily surrendered to the responding police officers.
Servilla said Capuyan was temporarily released after the operator of the mini bus, Evengeline Pua, assured to shoulder the burial expenses for the victim until the day of the internment. (FREEMAN)
