CEBU, Philippines - In a bid to ease traffic, the Lapu-Lapu City Traffic Management System yesterday built a lane for tricycles for hire, which stretches from the city public market up to barangay Basak.
CTMS chief Frank Brazil said the putting up of a tricycle lane would allow the smooth flow of traffic in the barangay.
Brazil's office has been flooded with complaints from commuters bound for Marigondon and neighboring barangays.
Abusive tricycle drivers have been suspected of being one of the causes of bottlenecks especially during peak hours. The other one is the mall in the barangay where vehicles stop to drop or pick up passengers.
Thousands of passengers mostly workers at the different business and industrial establishments at Mactan Export Processing Phase II pass through Basak.
With the triclycle lane, Brazil hopes it will minimize if not totally solve the traffic problem in the place.
During his first term of office, former mayor and now lone district of Lapu-Lapu Rep. Arturo Radaza banned tricycle for hire from passing through the national highway.
The tricycles were only allowed to ply in secondary roads.
At present, thousands of tricycle are operating in the city. (FREEMAN)
