Guanzon told: Account funds

- Garry B. Lao -

CEBU, Philippines - The out-going president of the Barangay Councilors’ League of the Philippines Cebu City Chapter has welcomed the City Council’s move to look into the finances of the organization.

Capitol Site Barangay Captain-elect Manuel Guanzon said he is willing to submit to the council’s scrutiny to check the expenses he incurred during his incumbency since 2008.

The City Council has asked Guanzon to submit a liquidation report on the financial assistance extended by the city government amounting to P3 million.

“It is behooves upon the Cebu City Government to require the beneficiary entity of financial assistance to submit a report on the disbursements charged to the funding received,” said Councilor Jose Daluz’ resolution.

“Those expenses are public concerns, they are subject to auditing,” Guanzon said.

Then mayor and now Rep. Tomas Osmeña granted the BCLP in November 2008 the amount of P3 million for barangay sports development and promotions.

BCLP treasurer Ramon Tiong Jr. showed documents to The Freeman that P 2, 544, 888.50 was already spent while the remaining P455,111.50 remains in their coffer.

Tiong explained that the city fund was used for the activities and purchases of sports equipment intended for the barangays.

The BCLP organized sports activities for 560 barangay councilors in the city such as basketball tournaments, inter-barangay volleyball tournaments, seminars and trainings, bowling, shooting festival, among others. (FREEMAN)
