City dad to stop spread of "double dead" meat
CEBU, Philippines - Talisay City Councilor Choy Aznar will propose a measure today requesting that meat be inspected regularly due to increasing reports of spoiled or diseased meat, known as "double dead," being sold in public markets.
Aznar, chairman on council committee on Health, said that reports of contaminated meat being sold in Manila and even in Cebu is already alarming, hence, today he will file a resolution in the council requesting the City Health Office to conduct regular inspections on the city's public markets.
Double-dead meat comes from animals that have died due to illnesses or diseases and cut up to be sold in public markets. The diseases could be transmitted to humans, Aznar said.
He said the buying public can't tell "double-dead" from the National Meat Inspection Service-approved meat.
There had been similar reports in the past but these were not proven.
The neophyte legislator said the sale of double-dead meat is a violation of Republic Act 9296, known as the Meat Inspection Code, and the Consumer Act of the Philippines. (FREEMAN)
