City councilor to LTO, DPWH: Focus on road safety

- Garry B. Lao -

CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu City Council is asking the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to conduct a survey and inspection to check whether all road signs are visible to ensure the safety of motorists and the public.

Cebu City Councilor Noel Eleuterio Wenceslao, chairman of the committee on urban planning and development, also urged the Land Transportation Office (LTO) and other concerned agencies to conduct information and education drive on road safety.

Wenceslao said he has been receiving complaints that some signs in the road could be hardly recognized because they compete with giant billboards.

Wenceslao said that road safety is also not limited to the posting of road safety devices and road signs but to see to it that they were properly installed and are visible.

“There is also a need to call the attention of the DPWH to conduct a survey and to check the visibility of all road signs,” Wenceslao said. He added that learning road safety is important given the series of road accidents that happened in Cebu and the country in the past months.

Wenceslao said the two government agencies must work together in enforcing the laws and ordinances to ensure a dependable road safety system in the city in order to protect the welfare of the general public.

Last June, the public witnessed a shocking tragedy when a tourist bus fell meters down from the transcentral highway claiming the lives of 21 people, mostly Iranians.

The tragedy was attributed partly to the lack of road signs in the area, which has prompted the Cebu City Government to install traffic signs from the Salinas Drive in Barangay Lahug all the way to the boundary of Balamban. (FREEMAN)
